Authorities in Oyo State Saturday ordered that the Shasha market in Akinyele Local Government Area of Ibadan be shut down immediately.

Afriupdate learnt that the shutdown order follows a bloody ethnic clash recorded in the market on Friday.

A 6pm to 7am curfew was also imposed on the Shasha area.

The order was contained in a statement signed by Taiwo Adisa, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde.

According to the statement, the order was placed on the area to forestall breakdown of law and order.

The government warned residents of the affected area to go about their legitimate businesses peacefully, stating that anyone caught perpetrating violence will face the wrath of the law.

“His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde has directed the immediate closure of Shasha market indefinitely following reports of a breach of peace in the area,” the government’s statement said.

“The governor has also approved the imposition of curfew on Shasha. It will run from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.

“Anyone caught disrupting the peace of the community will be made to face the wrath of the law.”

Oyo State has been a hot bed of ethnic strife recently. Spotlight on this form of violence returned to the state two weeks ago when Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho issued a quit notice to Fulani herdsmen in Igangan, area of the state. At the expiration of the ultimatum, he had gone to the area to address thousands of supporters, insisting that the Fulani herdsmen must leave. The violence that erupted at the end of the address had led to the burning of properties and sacking of herdsmen from the area.
