Edo State has recorded an increase in the number of deaths from those who did not get vaccinated before the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic, bringing the total number of fatalities to 12.
Incident Manager of the State COVID-19 Task Force, Dr. Andrew Obi, disclosed this after its daily virtual meeting presided over by Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Obi, who reiterated the need for all residents to get vaccinated against the scourge, urged Edo citizens to leverage the opportunity of the second phase vaccination to get protected against the COVID-19 virus adding that the victim is a 76-year-old unvaccinated man, who died, yesterday, at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital.

“In the last 24 hours, Edo State has recorded one more COVID-19-related death and 61 new confirmed cases, with case positivity rate of 15.1 per cent, which brings the total number of fatalities in the third wave of the pandemic to 12,” he said.

“We urge all citizens to leverage the opportunity of the ongoing second phase vaccination exercise and present themselves at the nearest vaccination centre within their communities to get vaccinated, as it is the safest way to defeat this common enemy of mankind.”

MEANWHILE, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has eulogised the virtues of the late Victor Uwaifo, describing his death as loss of one of the country’s finest national assets.

Obaseki, who led other top government officials to the late Uwaifo’s residence, off Ekewan Road, Benin City, on a condolence visit, said the deceased achieved so much in the 80 years of his lifetime.

“Victor Uwaifo is a music icon, a legend and a national asset. His loss is not only to the state, but also to the entire country. The last time I saw him was in a gathering a couple of weeks ago in Benin City, and we exchanged pleasantries. He was a national asset.

“The Sultan of Sokoto called me last night to express his condolences and he said Sir Uwaifo was a legend that influenced several generations,” he said.

Wife of the deceased, Osaretin Uwaifo, thanked the governor and his team for the visit, noting that the family has been peaceful that the state government had identified with the family during their time of grief.
