Nine killed in Kwara crashes

Four persons on Wednesday died in an accident in Offa, Kwara State.

The crash, which occurred about 10:27am on the Offa-Ojoku road, involved one Toyota Camry car and a tricycle also known as Keke NAPEP.

It was gathered that the Toyota Camry car, driven by an auto-mechanic, rammed into the tricycle, killing three of the occupants and a roadside female trader.

Eyewitness account revealed that some students of the Federal Polytechnic Offa, who were also in the tricycle, sustained injuries.

It was learnt that a mob set ablaze the Toyota Camry car.

Confirming the accident, Kwara State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Jonathan Owoade, said the bodies have been deposited at the General Hospital, Offa.

The Federal Polytechnic, Offa on Wednesday suspended lectures in sympathy with two of its students who were injured in the accident

Spokesperson for the institution Olayinka Iroye said: “Management wishes to inform the polytechnic community that the accident, which occurred this morning (yesterday), involved a tricycle and a Toyota Camry car. Two students of the polytechnic, who were in the tricycle, are in stable condition and are responding to treatment.

“Consequently, lectures have been suspended for today, while students are admonished to remain calm and conduct themselves peacefully.

“Management condoles with the families of other victims of the crash.”

Five persons were declared dead as a Lagos bound NSTA vehicle collided with a truck on Jebba-Ilorin road.

The Nation gathered that the bus, which is the second Lagos bound bus to move from Minna, had 12 passengers on board, including the driver.

It was learnt that the  accident occurred as a result of wrong overtaking by the truck driver. A statement by the Niger State Commissioner for Transport, Rahmatu Mohammed Yar’adua, said the truck rammed into the vehicle from the back, which resulted in a collision.

“As at 6pm on Tuesday, it was confirmed that five lives were lost. Four persons are receiving treatment at the Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, while three sustained minor injuries and are in good condition.”

The Niger State Government has commiserated with the bereaved families.

The government, through the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Idris, said the government was shocked over the loss of lives in the state-owned bus. He prayed for the quick recovery of the injured.
