The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) on Tuesday said National Identification Number (NIN) generated during the Bank Verification Number (BVN) registration can only be used after it has been updated at the NIMC enrollment Center.
The commission made this known via its official Twitter page. It said until the NIN is registered at the NIMC enrollment centre it is invalid.
Afriupdate reports that NIMC made the clarification amidst confusion caused by the use of shortcodes to generate the NIN. The Commission warned that an incomplete registration will hinder the user’s access to the NIMC mobile app and render the NIN-SIM integration invalid.
Meanwhile, some Nigerians had claimed that they had not visited any NIMC enrollment centre but they got a NIN number after their BVN registration.
The commission, therefore, urged Nigerians to ensure that they go to any NIMC enrolment centre near them for an update.
The tweet read, “NIN generated by the BVN can only be used after it has been updated at the NIMC enrollment Center. You must complete your NIN registration even if your BVN has generated a NIN.
“If your NIN was generated due to BVN record harmonisation with the National Identity Database, you will not have access to the NIMC mobile APP and your NIN-SIM integration will be invalid.
“KIndly visit an enrollment centre to complete your NIN.”

Recall that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had asked all telecommunication to disconnect the SIM cards of persons who have not integrated their NIN with their phone lines by the end of January.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami had said an application is available to help Nigerians link their NIN with up to seven phone numbers. But NIMC warned Nigerians to adopt caution while downloading the mobile application for linking NIN with SIM cards as fraudulent applications are now available on the internet.
REACTIONS:

I completed my NIN registration and got a wrong date of birth due to an incorrect BVN registration.
But even after the BVN was corrected, NIN database clung to the wrong info.
Frankly I wish banks *had* been in charge of NIN registration, rather than the incompetents at the NIMC.— Ayo Obe (@naijama) January 12, 2021
