Hit-and-run bus driver kills LNSC officer in Lagos

• Another hit-and-run driver kills pastor, wife and three-year-old son in Abuja

The Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Ejigbo, Lagos State, has warned the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to fish out the commercial bus driver who killed one of its officers at Iyana Ejigbo Bus Stop on Monday.

An officer, Nsude Chika, attached to Iyana Ejigbo, was knocked down by a ‘Danfo’ bus at Power Line Bus Stop, Iyana Ejigbo. He died on the spot while the driver ran away. The deceased was said to be on his way to his duty post when the incident happened at about 1:30p.m. on Monday.

A resident of Ejigbo said the driver, who was driving against traffic, ran away with his passengers after knocking the victim under a moving trailer.

“The sad news is that he was knocked down by LT bus plying one-way and knocked under the trailer. It is even funny that no LASTMA official or policeman could pick the bus number nor arrest the driver till he ran away with passengers inside the bus.”

The LNSC Corps Superintendent, Ejigbo LCDA, Omokayode Adeoye, said the body of the victim was evacuated and deposited in a mortuary at Isolo General Hospital while investigation is on to fish out the driver.

He said: “We urge the authority of NURTW to investigate this matter and fish out the LT driver who knocked him down and ran away to avert the fracas that might occur between the LNSC officers and the yellow bus drivers.”

The Head of Administration, Ejigbo LNSC, Rasaq Makanjuola, explained that the accident was caused by a member of the NURTW, who was chasing the bus driver for refusing to give him money.

According to him, the driver, in a bid to escape, took one-way and hit the unsuspecting LNSC officer who was riding on his bicycle to his duty post. He urged the leadership of the NURTW to arrest the worker, popularly called ‘Agbero’ to fish out the driver for investigation.

Lagos State police spokesman, SP Muyiwa Adejobi, said: “It is a case of hit-and-run. No suspect has been arrested for now. The CP has ordered that the DPO exploit all scientific means to track down the fleeing driver who will be made to face the full wrath of the law.”

IN Jigawa State, five members of the same family died on Sunday in a road accident along Gaya-Dutse Road. The accident, a head-on-collision, occurred along the busy highway connecting Kano and Maiduguri. The victims included Abubakar Isah, a deputy director in the Jigawa State Ministry of Land, who died alongside his wife and three children.

The police spokesperson for Jigawa, Abdu Jinjiri, confirmed the incident and said the accident occurred late Sunday night. He said more details would be provided and that investigation into the accident had commenced.

A relative of the deceased, Ibrahim Isyaku, confirmed that the late Isah was returning to Dutse, his place of work, following a weekend in neighbouring Kano State. The accident was suspected to be caused by over-speeding resulting in loss of control of the vehicle.

MEANWHILE, another tragedy occurred in Abuja when a hit-and-run driver rammed into a couple and their three-year-old son as they attempted to cross the road in Abuja, killing all three on the spot.

The man, named Ekene, is said to be a pastor of the Living Faith Church in Karonmajiji. They were returning from a service at Galadimawa to Karomanjiji where they lived.

Just as they alighted from a tricycle that brought them, the wife had the three-year-old son strapped to her back while the husband led them to cross the ever busy Airport Junction road close to Coca-Cola Bridge by Federal Medical Centre Abuja, when the unknown driver rammed into them, killing the couple while their son’s body hung on the car’s bonnet as he escaped.

By the time road safety officials arrived the scene, the mangled bodies of the deceased were lying on different sides of the road. Their baby was nowhere to be found. The officials and sympathisers searched everywhere in the nearby bush, but the little boy could not be found.

An eyewitness who roasts corn at the junction close to the scene, one Goodluck Sunday, said: “This one pained me like they were my relations. I cried more than when my mother died. My mother died in Abuja here while I was in the village, that is why I am roasting corn here because I don’t have any person to run to for help.

“I saw the dead bodies; the pastor, his wife and child were coming back from church in Galadimawa inside a Keke Napep. They dropped at this junction and wanted to cross the road. Their child was disturbing them, and the mother decided to strap the baby on her back.

“They were trying to cross the road then the car hit the husband and the wife. Their son’s body clung to the bonnet of the car. We searched for his body all around that day, but could not find it. This morning, the body was found at Airport junction, close to Jabi. The family just packed into the place a week before,” he said.

According to the First Information Report released by the Federal Road Safety Public (FRSC), the vehicle type, make and registration number are not known. “Number of people involved were four: two males, one female and a child.

“Three persons lost their lives. The victims were taken to Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, but were rejected due to space. They were later deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.”
