Group seeks justice for Osinachi, victims of domestic violence

Calls for anti-domestic abuse Act

A not-for-profit group, children and Young People Living for Peace (CYPLP), yesterday, called for justice for late gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu and every Nigerian woman who has ever been a victim of domestic violence.
The group also called for an ‘Anti-Domestic Abuse Act’, legislation that will ensure that there is funding for specific domestic abuse services, including gender desks at police stations across the country.

According to the group, domestic abuse is a high prevalence, a high form of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), thus Its scale and impact warrant a more dedicated strategy to save lives.

The group, whose petition has secured 128 signatories from the target of 200, said the ‘Domestic Abuse Act’ would also include additional funding for gender desks at police stations across the country.

The act will further mandate the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to begin, intensify and continue mass communication of messages, especially in local dialects across the available media platforms geared at stemming the menace of domestic violence and abuse nationwide.

According to the group, being a woman and growing up as a girl in Nigeria is challenging from complicated cycles of abuse to discrimination socially, culturally, religiously, traditionally, and worst above all politically.
It said: “ Gender discrimination is symbolic of domestic violence, where wives (women) are battered, victimised, and beaten to death by their husbands(men).

“Another angelic voice has fallen to domestic violence. In this case, it is Osinachi Nwachukwu, a popular Nigerian gospel singer, whose song brought relief and joy to many.

“But her death must count. Osinachi Nwachukwu died after she was assaulted by her husband, according to her family, friends, and colleagues. This is tragic and we want justice to prevail.

“The police have arrested her husband, Peter Nwachukwu in connection to the death of his wife, according to media reports.

“We’re calling on you to sign this petition, calling on the Commissioner of Police FCT Police Command to ensure that he faces the full wrath of the law for this crime if found guilty.
“Justice for Osinachi is Justice for every Nigerian woman who has ever been a victim of domestic violence.”
