Fire guts Nguru Central Market in Yobe

• Lawan Sympathises With Victims
An early morning fire, yesterday, gutted the Nguru Central Market in Yobe State, destroying several shops and stalls.

Last year, the same market was gutted by an inferno that destroyed over N55m worth of goods.

Nguru is a commercial city linked with a railway to Hadejia and Kano.

Confirming the incident in Damaturu, the state capital, the Information Officer of Nguru Local Council, Audu Yaro, said the fire raged for over three hours, as there was no fire service in the local council.

He said youth intervention prevented more shops from being destroyed.

Meanwhile, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has expressed commiserated with the victims.

In a statement by his Media Adviser, Ola Awoniyi, he expressed his sympathy towards those whose shops, stalls and warehouses got burnt or lost materials in the unfortunate incident.

“I commiserate with the people of Nguru and in particular, those who are directly affected by the fire outbreak at the main market.

“We have already reached out to the officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for their quick intervention by providing relief materials to the victims

“We will also make other interventions at our personal level to assuage the plights of all those who are affected,” Lawan said.

Yaro said: “With today’s market disaster, the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) could not assist the fire victims, until an assessments are carried next week.”
