Hours after the Lekki Toll Gate shooting which has sent shockwaves through the entire Nigeria, President of the country, Muhammadu Buhari is yet to speak on the controversial matter.

Afriupdate reports that witnesses said the shooting by security agents began at about 7 p.m on Tuesday, and observers claim about 20 lives of peaceful protesters were cut short, with others injured.

Armed soldiers were seen barricading the protest site moments before the shooting.

An unnamed eyewitness told BBC News: “At exactly 6.45 pm [local time] the soldiers pulled up… and they started firing directly at we, the peaceful protesters.

“They were firing and they were advancing straight at us. It was chaos. Somebody got hit straight beside me and he died on the spot.

“It was pandemonium and they kept on shooting and shooting at us.

“It lasted for about an hour and a half and the soldiers were actually taking up the dead bodies.”

President Buhari, 77, is the head of state and head of government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He is also the commander-in-chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

But several hours after video showed men in army uniform shooting at Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, while anti-police brutality protesters chant #EndSARS, the number one citizen of the nation is silent.

It is noteworthy that despite strong evidence showing soldiers were involved in the shooting, the Nigerian Army has denied being behind the Lekki Lagos Toll Gate episode, saying “no soldier was at the scene”.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who earlier on Tuesday announced a 24-hour curfew, has visited victims of the shooting at the hospitals while promising to give a state broadcast later on Wednesday.
