Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, last Thursday, swore in one of his wives, Mrs. Patience Zuofa-Diri, and three others as Judges of the state High Court.

The Judges took the oath of office inside the Executive Chambers of Government House, Yenagoa, based on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC).

The judges include a former Registrar of the state High Court, James Lookie; a Law lecturer at the Niger Delta University, Dr. Simon Amaduobogha and a legal practitioner, Mrs. Christine Enegesi.

Diri congratulated the new judicial officers on their appointment and elevation, urging them to serve the people with unfailing honour and commitment.

We’ve blocked Nembe oil leakage, Aiteo says

December 9, 2021
Fresh massive crude oil fire caused by a massive crude oil spill from the wellhead of Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company in its Santa Barbara South Field is currently ravaging Opu-Nembe community in Bayelsa State.
The fire, which is still raging from the wellhead, according to community sources, has left many of the people in fear as many had fled their community.

A community source, who spoke in confidence, said the wellhead from Well One of the oil exploration company has been discharging serious hydrocarbon into the environment before it caught fire yesterday night.

He said, “The people of Opu-Nembe need serious environmental and medical attention. You can see there is a boom line but the boom line set up by Aiteo cannot put off the fire, it has gone to the highest level of hazard.”

Confirming the fire and spill incident, Aiteo, operator of the NNPC/Aiteo Joint Venture on OML 29 on Friday, reported that an oil spill from a non-producing well head in its Santa Barbara South field, has caught fire.

A statement signed by Ndiana Mathew, head of its Media team, said the magnitude of the incident is of an extremely high order.

“Neither the cause of the spill, nor the quantity of leaked hydrocarbon could be determined at the time of the discovery, though containment booms were deployed and recovery commenced immediately around the well head.

“As an incident of this nature imports, the necessary Oil Spill Notification Report have been promptly communicated to National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and National Petroleum Investment Services (NAPIMS) as is required by regulation.

“Ultimately, a Joint Investigative Visit (JIV) to the spill site was held by all relevant stakeholders, community inclusive. The JIV, at the time, was inconclusive, owing to difficulties with access due to high pressure of hydrocarbons from the wellhead.

“Additionally, immediate efforts to control the leak were aborted due to the high pressure emanating from the well head. Consequently, Aiteo has mobilised a full intervention team with well control specialists and equipment both locally and internationally to arrest the leak.

He commended the NJC, the state Judicial Service Commission, the state Chief Judge and the Chief Justice of Nigeria for facilitating the process and endorsement of their nomination from the state.

He said they were found suitable for the exalted office after meeting some strict criteria.

The governor noted that his administration prioritises the judiciary in view of its significant role in society, stressing that it would not compromise the neutrality and independence of the judiciary as the last hope of the common man.

He also stated that all facilities and obligations required for the appointment of additional judges for the state’s High Court had been provided, adding that the state looks forward to the appointment of more judges in the new year.

Recalling the embarrassing invasion of the Abuja residence of Supreme Court’s Justice Mary Odili, the governor called on the relevant authorities to expedite action to bring those culpable to justice.

“Those responsible in that opprobrium must appropriately and expeditiously be punished for their transgression.

“These are strongholds of justice, protectors of liberty, symbol of law and order, custodians of the rule of law and embodiments of the hopes and dreams of our people. And if they can be treated with such impunity, then we are all much poorer for it.

“It is germane to restate that separation of powers should not in any way suggest division. In the end, we have a shared obligation to serve the people of Bayelsa State. We are one government united by one common purpose to deliver the hopes and dreams of the people of the state,” he said.
