COVID -19: Imo begins fumigation of markets, public places

Imo State Government has commenced the fumigation of markets to ensure that the state is free of the dreaded coronavirus and other diseases.

Also, the State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, at the weekend, inaugurated six isolation centres to contain the deadly disease.

The six well-equipped isolation centres are Okigwe General Hospital, Aboh Mbaise General Hospital, Orlu General Hospital, Federal Medical Centre Owerri, General Hospital Umuguma and the Ultra-Modern Well-being Centre, Owerri, Orlu Road.

The governor also used the opportunity to launch Aggressive Response Crime Scheme with several vehicles to fight crimes in all parts of the state.

According to him, the centre in Owerri has operational ready test and treatment section for the virus with molecular laboratory to test all viruses.

He disclosed that a well-trained and equipped medical experts from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), were on ground to test and ascertain the carrier of the viruses and symptoms.

The governor, who also inaugurated 28 ambulances, said they would help in the fight against the virus.

Meanwhile, to reduce spread of the COVID-19 virus in markets, the Ini Ememobong Foundation has commissioned a health team to fumigate major markets and abattoirs in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The markets to be covered in the first batch are the Akpan Andem, and Itam Markets along with the Central abattoir Livestock Market at Itam.

Members of the foundation led by its Chairman, Comrade Ini Ememobong and Chancellor, Ulap Bassey Essang made a brief stopover to allay fears of the market users on the proposed fumigation.

According to Ememobong, the fumigation exercise became imperative to check the spread of the virus from the markets and abattoirs to people’s home.

Meanwhile, the donation of hand washing buckets, hand sanitisers and liquid soaps to major markets will continue today in major markets in Essien Udim, Abak, Ikot Ekpene and Ibiono Ibom as part of efforts to increase awareness on COVID-19.
