The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr Ahmad Abdurrahman, has warned security personnel charged with boundary closure duties against exhibiting corrupt tendencies.

A statement issued by the command Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, on Friday in Enugu, said the commissioner gave the warning and consequences of sanctions after inspecting the level of enforcement of the boundary closure with neighbouring states recently.

It would be recalled that the boundary closure is a directive of the Enugu State Government to forestall unnecessary movement of people and check the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Abdurrahman led other heads of security agencies in the state to inspect the boundary, even as he addressed all the security personnel on the dangers of compromising their jobs.

“I charge you, security personnel manning the boundary, to take the enforcement duty very serious and shun corruption, because corruption has disciplinary consequences.

“Corrupt tendencies are capable of jeopardising the aim of the closure.

“I also want you to be guided by the stipulated rules of engagement and perform the enforcement duty with the fear of God Almighty, professionally and resist all forms of corrupt practices,’’ the commissioner warned.

While addressing the personnel at Amalla/Orokam boundary point between Enugu and Benue States, he frowned at the allegations of compromise and complicity for pecuniary reasons leveled against them.

According to him, the police boss made it categorically clear that anyone found wanting would face severe disciplinary sanctions.

The commissioner said: “I task you all from various security agencies to maintain utmost professionalism and shun corruption.

“You should see yourselves as one family working collaboratively to achieve the common goal of protecting lives and curbing the spread of the deadly Coronavirus.

“When you perform this duty conscientiously, with dedication, the fear of God and without discrimination on the basis of tribe and religion as well as resist corruption, we will all succeed in this fight against the pandemic.”

The heads of security agencies that went on the tour with the commissioner included Brig.-Gen. Christopher Ataki, Garrison Commander, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army; and Air Commodore Chidiebere Obiabaka, Commander, 553 Base Services Group of the Nigerian Air-Force, Enugu.

Others were Mr Samuel Olofu, State Director, Department of State Security (DSS); and Mr Everestus Obiyo, Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corp (NSCDC), Enugu State Command.
