Our lives in danger, Zuru people of Kebbi cry out
Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the kidnap of the immediate past Commissioner for Higher Education, Chief Clement Uhembe, at his Lafia residence by unknown gunmen about 8.30p.m. on Tuesday.

The abductors are demanding N30 million ransom to release the senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia).

Witnesses said the gunmen were armed with sophisticated weapons when they invaded the former commissioner’s residence.

Wife of the victim, Mrs. Amarya Uhembe, told journalists that the abductors, numbering about 10, invaded their residence and broke into one of their apartments where her husband was taking his rest and whisked him away.

“They came about 8.30p.m. and started knocking forcefully at the door while my husband was in the inner room. I moved close to the door to see who was knocking, only to discover heavily armed men. I quickly tried to close the door, shouting for help before my husband came to join me in the struggle to close the door, even as they were dragging to force themselves into the parlour.

“My husband rushed to the door and we succeeded in closing it. But the gunmen used objects to break the doors and wall to gain entrance,” she said.

While taking the man away, the gunmen allowed him to take his mobile phone along for communication, the woman added.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nansel Ramhan, who confirmed the incident, said the command mobilised personnel to rescue the victim.

FOLLOWING the security challenges in Zuru Emirate of Kebbi State, the Ibakkana Association, a mouthpiece of the emirate, has said the people’s lives are in danger.

Chairman of the association, Sheik Mikail, while addressing newsmen in Birnin Kebbi yesterday, lamented that the situation had impacted negatively on the people, especially in the areas of commerce and agriculture.

“Mass murder, burning of children, insertion of dry cell batteries into women’s private parts, burning of grains and villages, cattle rustling and multiple kidnapping in the area are close to genocide because we received no assistance from security agencies

“We are living in the horn of a dilemma. We have reported our plights to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), but things keep growing from bad to worse,” he said.

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Nwanchukwu Enwonwu, has warned the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) personnel in the state against violating the Inspector-General of Police, Muhammed Adamu’s directives banning routine patrol by the squad.
Enwonwu gave the warning during a retirement party, organised for the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of administration, Attahiru Isah, on Monday in Ibadan.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adam had, on Sunday, announced the ban on FSARS and other tactical teams from carrying out routine patrols, stop-and-search duties and checking of electronic gadgets, among others.
