A foremost OREMOST educationist, Prof. Olu Aina and other stakeholders in the nation’s education sector, yesterday, appealed to the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to consider the plight of students and end it.

Aina, a former Chief Executive Officer of the National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB), urged ASUU members to resume classes for the sake of undergraduates whose academic pursuits had been hindered and continue negotiations with the Federal Government.

He made the appeal in Osogbo, while speaking at the inauguration of the implementation committee of the proposed University of Ilesa by the Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola.

The educationist expressed worry that the continuous idleness of majority of the affected students would expose them to ills and other negative acts, adding that the exercise of grievances shouldn’t tamper with education of students who are the future and builders of the nation.

He said: “I want to appeal to members of ASUU to suspend their strike and allow further talks that will resolve this issue. I want them to consider our children (students) who have been seriously affected by this total shutdown of campuses. Their continuous idleness and stay at home may expose them to things we wouldn’t want them to associate with.”

Other stakeholders in the education sector, including parents and students, also called on ASUU to allow students resume their academic activities while it continues to negotiate with the government.
SIMILARLY, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has appealed to the Federal Government and ASUU to find ways of resolving the crisis for the interest of students and the nation as a whole.

Abiodun, who made the appeal, yesterday, at the inauguration of the Governing-Councils of the state-owned tertiary institutions, held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, decried the prolonged crisis, which according to him, has done more harm to the education sector of the country.

He, however, urged the newly-inaugurated council members of the tertiary institutions in Ogun State to synergise with the management of their various institutions.

Abiodun further charged them to look into how to surpass what the administration inherited by placing the schools in vantage position to compete with similar institutions around the world.
