Ikpeazu accuses illegal migrants of crimes in Abia

Gunmen on Tuesday evening attacked the police at a checkpoint in Nachi, Oji River Local Council in Enugu State, killed two police personnel and took away their rifles.
The attack came a few weeks after a similar incident claimed the lives of four policemen in Amaechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Council.

Sources told The Guardian that the gunmen started shooting at the policemen on getting to the checkpoint.

“Their firing power made most motorists abandon their vehicles and fled,” the source added. “The two policemen died on the spot.”

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Daniel Ndukwe, said the command had commenced an action to track down killers.

“Full-scale investigation that will lead to the arrest of the assailants has commenced. Further development will be communicated,” Ndukwe said.

IN another development, Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, has cried out over acts of criminality in the state, especially along the Lokpanta and Isuikwuato axes in Umunneochi and Isiukwuato local councils respectively.
Ikpeazu attributed most of the criminal activities mainly to illegal immigrants that flooded the state, and listed students, workers and lecturers of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, as well as commuters, among others, as notable victims.

He spoke yesterday when the former Comptroller of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Abia, Mrs. Anthonia Opara, who is now the Deputy Comptroller-General (DCG), visited him in Umuahia, accompanied by the new State Controller, Samuel Offiong, and some officers of the NIS.

The governor disclosed that he received credible intelligence on the criminal activities of the gang and promised to share the reports with NIS.
He consequently tasked the Service, along with other military and paramilitary formations, to take a deeper look at the activities of the illegal immigrants, which has become inimical to the state, the residents and passersby.

Assuring NIS of his government’s sustained support to actualise its mandate, Ikpeazu congratulated Mrs. Opara on her elevation to the position of DCG not long after serving as NIS Controller in the state.

Earlier in her address, Opara, who is in charge of Migration at the Abuja Headquarters, thanked the governor for his immense support to the Abia Command of NIS, which she said he demonstrated in the rehabilitation of the burnt Abia command offices.

She reassured the governor of the continued partnership of NIS with the state government and appealed to his host to assist them with operational vehicles to enable them to carry out their operations effectively in the state.
