Group condemns power disconnection in Ajegunle communities

The Coalition for Affordable and Regular Electricity (CARE) has condemned Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) for its unlawful disconnection of electricity supply in some communities in Ajegunle after the communities resisted billing for the period of three months when power was not supplied.

According to the group, EKEDC circulated electricity bills for May 2020, June 2020, and July 2020, but there was no electricity supply to the affected residents within the three months.

“The Apapa TCN 45 MKV Transformer broke down on May 17 and supply of electricity was not restored until August 21. This disruption in supply affected the following streets and communities in Ajegunle, Lagos: Aiyetoro, Alayabiagba, Okorogbo, Ugbowankwo Lane, Tunkarimu, Olubokola, Iyalode, Odofin, Ijora and Bale.

“The communities’ residents staged a peaceful mass protest on August 27, in response to the unlawful and exploitative billing of EKEDC. In order to force the unwarranted bills down the residents’ throat, EKEDC disconnected the communities on August 28,” the group said.

Nigeria’s Minister for Health Osagie Ehanire displays an image of the the novel coronavirus COVID-19 as he address the media regarding the first case of the virus confirmed in Nigeria during a press briefing in Abuja on February 28, 2020. – Ehanire said in a statement overnight that the infected person was an Italian citizen who flew in from Milan, at the heart of Europe’s largest outbreak, earlier this week. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country with some 190 million people, is viewed as one of the world’s most vulnerable to the spread of the virus given its weak health system and high population density.
