Despite suspension of the sit-at-home-order by the leadership of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), people in some states in the eastern Nigeria still locked their shops and stayed at home on Monday.

The group announced the suspension of their ‘every Monday’ sit-at-home order, while adding that the order would only hold when their self-acclaimed leader, Nnamdi Kanu appears at the Abuja court for his ongoing case with the Federal Government.

When the order was first announced on 8 August, there was compliance in most states of the south-east. It was however thought that with the suspension of the order, normalcy supposed to return. BBC Pidgin reports that this was not however the case in some of the cities in the eastern region on Monday, 16 August.

It was reported that despite the suspension of the sit-at-home order, streets were deserted and shops were under locked on the day of a new working week.

Some residents who spoke on condition of anonymity said the reason there was a kind of sit-at-home was because of fear of unknown, while some said they did this because of their support for the actualization of the State of Biafra.

BBC Pidgin also reports that popular Unizik Junction in Awka, Anambra state which used to experience heavy traffic of people on a normal business day saw few people going about their normal daily activities with heavy presence of security operatives stationed at flash points for surveillance to maintain law and order and safe of lives and properties.
