Uganda’s Ministry of Health on Wednesday reported 98 new confirmed COVID-19 cases raising the nationwide total to 2,524.

Kampala, again, led the way with the most number of cases registering 65 cases or 66 percent. The number of infections reported from Kampala, in particular, which has the highest numbers of community transmissions, has raised concern among authorities.

Also among the new infections reported were three Ugandan truck drivers who came from Kenya, one health worker and two returnees from South Africa and South Sudan.

The ministry’s statement also said that the death toll had risen to 26 after one person succumbed to the deadly disease.

“Uganda recorded one death today; a Ugandan male aged 27 years old and a resident of Mengo, Kampala. The cumulative total of COVID-19 deaths is now 26.”

Figures from the statement indicated that there was a single recovery recorded taking the total number of recoveries to 1,268.

The ministry also reported that three foreign truck drivers, two Kenyans and one Tanzanian, tested positive for COVID-19 and were denied entry into the country.

At the same time, the ministry announced that Mulago National Referral Hospital had been closed as a COVID-19 sample collection site for all individuals.

It said the hospital will remain an isolation and COVID-19 Treatment Unit only for all patients who have tested positive for COVID-19.

“Other sections of Mulago National Referral Hospital (Upper Mulago) remain open to the public to ensure diagnosis and treatment of other medical conditions,” the ministry said.
