Tunisia recorded 317 coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24 hours, a record tally since the start of the pandemic, the health ministry reported on Saturday.
In the same period, the North African country also registered 5,624 new infections as it continues efforts to contain the virus.
Over the past weeks, Tunisia has been experiencing a alarming spike in infections and deaths, prompting the government to announce stricter measures to curb further infections.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the country’s death tally is now the highest in Africa and in the Arab world.
By Saturday, the number of infections had reached 558,306 with 18,052 deaths.
The heightened situation has overwhelmed the health system, with reports of swarmed hospitals across the country.
The situation prompted Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi to sack the country’s health minister Faouzi Mehdi.
Various countries have sent medical supplies and personnel to Tunisia to help fight the pandemic.
The country has also received more than three million doses of vaccines to help tackle the spike in its caseload.
