Tunisian President Kais Saied has appointed Najla Bouden Romdhane as prime minister, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the presidency.

Romdhane, Tunisia’s first woman prime minister, will take office at a moment of crisis, with the democratic gains won in a 2011 revolution in doubt and as a major threat looms to public finances.

“The newly head of government will announce the composition of her cabinet as soon as possible,” the presidency said without giving further details.

On July 25, Saied announced that he had removed Hichem Mechichi from the post of prime minister and suspended all activities of the Assembly of People’s Representatives, or the parliament.
