South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to address the nation later on Sunday on the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ramaphosa’s address will follow meetings of the National Coronavirus Command Council, the President’s Coordinating Council and the Cabinet.
South Africa remains to be the hardest-hit country by the pandemic in Africa.
The country has recorded 2,368,105 COVID-19 infections with 69,488 deaths, both tallies being the highest on the continent.
The caseload represents 36.75 percent of Africa’s total caseload while the death toll represents 42.49 percent of its fatalities.
The government is however confident its response to the pandemic is paying off, noting earlier this week that a third wave of COVID-19 infections has passed its peak.
Various measures remain in place to contain further spread of the virus, including a ban on gatherings, a curfew from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. and a prohibition on the sale of alcohol.
A mass vaccination exercise is also underway with more than 4.2 million doses administered. Officials are hoping to ramp up daily vaccinations to at least 300,000 by the end of August.
