South African Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Njabulo Nzuza said on Tuesday that the number of people illegally crossing into South Africa at the Lebombo port of entry was worrying.

“Our biggest concern though is that more and more people moving into the border fence and moving into South Africa illegally,” he told Xinhua after visiting the Lebombo port of entry which is the third-largest land border in South Africa.

He said law enforcement agencies deployed at various borders were prepared to clamp down on illegal activities.

“We will continue to work with the South Africa Defence Force which was able to capture people who were trying to get into the country illegally,” he said.

“Hundreds of people have been caught, some of them are involved in illicit trade, some are bringing drugs into the country,” Nzuza said. He called on local communities near the border to work with law enforcement agencies in clamping down on illegal migration.

Nzuza visited the border after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that 20 land border posts would be closed until Feb. 15.
