Rebel group 3R in Central African Republic announces death of its leader

Mahamat Abass Sidiki, the leader of the 3R, a major rebel group in Central African Republic (CAR), died in March after being injured in attacks in November 2020, according to a statement released by the group Friday.

The founder of the 3R died on March 25 at a health center in Kamba-Kota in the northwestern part of the CAR following injuries he got during attacks in western CAR town of Bossembele on Nov. 16, said the statement, which was signed by Sambe Bobbo, who became the new leader of the rebel movement.

Sidiki had been announced dead by the authorities and the press several times. In December 2020, the CAR national radio said he was killed in Bossembele in a operation by the CAR army and UN peacekeepers.

Sidiki was one of the signatories representing the armed groups of the peace agreement of Feb. 6, 2019. Due to the subversive actions of his combatants, however, the CAR government and the UN peacekeeping mission (MINUSCA) decided in August 2020 on a joint military operation against the group.
