At least nine people were killed following two separate inter-communal attacks in the South Sudanese town of Bor in Jonglei state.

Jonglei State Governor Denay Chagar confirmed the deaths in a press statement while issuing a strong condemnation of the attacks.

“On November 19, two men travelling on motorbike to Anyidi Payam were ambushed on their way by suspected criminals from the Pibor Administrative Area. As a result, Anyidi youth took the law into their own hands and started to target members from Pibor living in Bor Town, killing seven,” Governor Chagar said.

“For this inhuman brutal killing, Jonglei State government is shocked and dismayed with unfortunate act and strongly condemns the attack.”

Several parts of Jonglei state have been plagued by communal and tribal violence, primarily due to cattle raiding, child kidnapping and disputes over grazing land.

Even though authorities have initiated peace and reconciliation forums and donors have invested heavily in peace projects, reprisal attacks have persisted.

Last month, more than 30 people were killed and at least 80 others were injured following inter-communal violence in Tonj East and parts of Tonj North in Warrap State.
