Militants have killed seven civilians in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, local officials said on Sunday, in the latest attack to hit the turbulent region.

CODECO militiamen attacked an army position in the Djukoth area of Ituri province’s Mahagi territory on Saturday evening, according to local Red Cross worker.

Ituri province is one of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo’s violence hotspots, where attacks claiming dozens of lives are routine.

Seven civilians were killed near the position, said the official, who declined to be named. Five children and two women were among the dead.

LUKUTU, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO - MARCH 21: A barge with about three hundred people has ran a ground in the evening on the Congo River on March 21, 2006 outside Lukutu, Congo, DRC. They are some of about five hundred people traveling on a boat from Kisangani to Kinshasa, a journey of about 1750 kilometers. The captain could not get the barge off and the people had to spend the night in the middle off the river, and they were only rescued the following day. Lukutu, located along the Congo River, is a small village with a palm oil factory and an economy of agriculture and fishing. Congo River is a lifeline for millions of people, who depend on it for transport and trade. During the Mobuto era, big boats run by the state company ONATRA dominated the traffic on the river. These boats had cabins and restaurants etc. All the boats are now private and are mainly barges that transport goods. The crews sell tickets to passengers who travel in very bad conditions, mixing passengers with animals, goods and only about two toilets for five hundred passengers. The conditions on the boats often resemble conditions in a refugee camp. Congo is planning to hold general elections by July 2006, the first democratic elections in forty years. Innocent Wabekudu, a community leader in Mahagi, also said that CODECO fighters had “savagely killed” seven people, who were buried on Sunday.

The Congolese army spokesman for military operations in Ituri, Lieutenant Jules Ngongo, was not immediately available for comment about details of the attack.

Armed groups have plagued mineral-rich eastern DR Congo for three decades, a legacy of regional wars that flared in the 1990s and 2000s.

The CODECO, or or Cooperative for the Development of the Congo, claims to protect the Lendu community from another ethnic group, the Hema, as well as the DRC army.
