The novel Coronavirus cases in Malawi on Monday increased to thirty-six following the confirmation of two new cases of the virus, Minister of Health Jappie Mhango has said.
Mhango says the two cases are a 47-year-old man from Chileka in Blantyre who arrived in the country on April 18 from Tanzania and a 45-year-old man staying near Livimbo School in Lilongwe and has no history of travel.
He said the 45-year-old man developed flue like symptoms and family members called the rapid response team for tests and results came out positive.
“Our team is today going to take samples from other family members. We will do contact tracing for all workers at his business premises and other closes contacts,” he said.
From the 36 covid-19 confirmed cases, 23 (including 2 deaths) are from Lilongwe, 9 (including 1 death) from Blantyre, and Chikwawa, Nkhotakota, Karonga and Zomba have one case each.
The covid-19 cases are soaring just a week after High Court Judge Kenyata Nyirenda granted the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) an injunction restraining government to implement lockdown as a measure to contain the novel coronavirus.
HRDC and opposition parties faulted the DPP-led government for failing to announce any tangible measures to alleviate pain of millions of poor Malawians during the lockdown.
