Cameroon began vaccinating its citizens against COVID-19 on Monday, after receiving 200,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine by China on Sunday.

Health Minister Malachie Manaouda said in a statement on April 9 that, “The government encourages the population, especially priority targets to be vaccinated when the time comes.”

Cameroon is among one of the most affected countries in Africa recording 61,700 cases of COVID-19 and 919 deaths.

The country is expected to receive vaccines through the COVAX global vaccines sharing scheme that aims to help poor countries access vaccines.
