At least one person is believed to have been killed in devastating floods that rocked South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, the province’s Primier Sihle Zikalala said on Monday.

Zikalala led a team of provincial officials on a tour of the affected areas to assess the extent of the damage caused by the latest flood disasters.

This is the second time in two months that the province has been hit by heavy floods, having also experienced destructive floods in April that left more than 440 people dead and infrastructure destroyed.

Zikalala confirmed that the most affected areas by the latest floods were in the southern part of Durban, especially the Bluff municipality. The northern parts of Durban were also affected, with roads being destroyed and buildings left hanging.

A statement released by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial authorities on Sunday noted that the province had received early warnings at Alert Level 10 from the South Africa Weather Service (SAWS).

“We are yet to receive a full comprehensive report on the impact of these latest heavy rains, but as reports come in, a worrying picture is however emerging,” the statement reads in part.

The provincial authorities pointed out that advisories had been sent out to municipalities to identify and allocate community halls to be used as shelters for those affected.
