Record-breaking long-distance runner, Agnes Tirop, who was stabbed to death last week, is scheduled to be laid to rest on Saturday at her home in Nandi County, Kenya.

Tirop’s body left a funeral home on Friday in Eldoret, and was paraded in the town for viewing by residents.

The late athlete drew a large crowd in the town, as family members, fellow athletes and distraught fans marched on the streets to demand action from the government against gender-based violence.

While holding a giant banner with the phrase “End Gender-Based Violence” and Tirop’s images printed on it, the crowd took the opportunity to champion for an end to such killings.

Tirop represented the East African country in the 5,000m women’s race during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Kenya has been in shock over a recent increase in reported cases of slain women. Besides Tirop another woman, a 17-year-old student and volleyball player, was raped, killed and then dumped in a river on October 4. The woman, Cynthia Makokha, had been on her way to visit family in Western Kenya when her attackers pounced.

According to police, Tirop’s husband, Ibrahim Rotich, who is the main suspect in her death is in custody as investigations continue.

One suspect is also in custody in connection with Makokha’s death.
