The number of COVID-19 infections in Africa stood at 2,196,257 on Thursday with a death toll of 52,490, according to data from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
Different countries on the continent have reported varying trends in their virus situations, as some report steady surges while others see a decline in their caseloads.
South Africa, which has reported 796,472 confirmed infections and 21,709 deaths is the hardest hit country on the continent.
It accounts for 36.26 percent of Africa’s caseload and 41.21 percent of its death toll.
Other than South Africa, only three other countries have registered more than 100,000 COVID-19 infections: Morocco (364,190), Egypt (116,724) and Ethiopia (110,984).
In terms of deaths, ten African countries – including South Africa – have recorded more than 1,000 COVID-19 related fatalities.
The data from the Africa CDC also shows that 1,862,685 patients in Africa successfully recovered from the virus.
