The number of COVID-19 infections in Africa reached 8,119,719 with 205,813 fatalities on Friday, a day after the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the continent faces a shortfall of almost 500 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines required to hit its year-end target of fully vaccinating 40% of its population.

Figures from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) show that Africa has conducted 69,786,067 tests so far.

From the total infections registered, the Africa CDC notes that 7,433,077 patients successfully recovered.

South Africa remains to be the highest-hit country by the pandemic on the continent, having registered 2,873,415 infections with 85,779 fatalities.

Two other African countries have recorded more then 500,000 COVID-19 cases; Morocco (913,423) and Tunisia (698,427).

Besides South Africa, three other countries on the continent have registered more than 10,000 virus-related fatalities; Tunisia (24,415), Egypt (16,921) and Morocco (13,775).

African countries have ramped up vaccinations in efforts to contain further spread of the virus, but the WHO warns that delays in more arrivals will deter the continent from vaccinating 40% of its population by December 2021.

Only two percent of the more than 5.8 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses administered globally have been given in Africa.
