Africa’s COVID-19 deaths top 100,000 mark

The number of COVID-19 deaths in Africa surpassed the 100,000 mark on Friday as the continent continues its efforts to curb further spread of the virus.

According to the latest data from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the continent’s deaths hit 100,294 from a total number of 3,796,354 infections.

South Africa accounts for the majority of the deaths, with 48,708 fatalities reported. This accounts for 48.56 percent of the continent’s death toll.

Egypt’s 10,201 virus-related deaths are the second-highest on the continent.

Besides the two countries, only Morocco (8,524) and Tunisia (7,684) have registered more than 5,000 COVID-19 fatalities.

The four countries account for 74.89 percent of Africa’s COVID-19 deaths so far.

Countries on the continent are focusing on the acquisition and distribution of vaccines in efforts to stop the virus.

While a few have already rolled out vaccination programs, many are expecting to receive the jabs starting this month.
