63 people have been killed and thousands of others have been displaced by floods caused by torrential rains in Sudan since July, according to the nation’s Ministry of Interior.

A statement from the ministry added that more than 14,000 homes and 119 public buildings have been destroyed, and more than 16,000 homes have been badly damaged.

The states of Gezira and Kassala, which are located in the east are the worst affected. Red Sea, North Kordofan, South Darfur, West Kordofan and Northern states have also been badly affected, the Government’s Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) said.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said an estimated 185,000 people have been affected and that number is expected to rise with more rainfall being anticipated in the coming months.

Sudan usually receives heavy rains between the months of June and October and severe flooding usually occurs.

Other than death and destruction of property, the OCHA said that the floods have caused landslides, killed thousands of livestock and destroyed several hectares of crops. The threat of an outbreak of diseases has also risen with the flooding.

The Government, led by the HAC, and humanitarian partners are closely observing the situation and providing life-saving assistance to people who lost their houses, food and livelihood.
