A Kenyan court on Wednesday found former Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Hassan Wario guilty of corruption and abuse of office that led to the loss of public funds meant for the Rio 2016 Olympics team.

Also found guilty of the same charge is the team’s Chef-de-Mission and former National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOCK) Executive Officer, Stephen Arap Soi.

Dressed in a dark suit, Wario, who is now serving as Kenya’s Ambassador to Australia, was in court to listen to the judgments delivered by trial judge Elizabeth Juma.

The scandal dubbed “Rio 2016 Fiasco” in local media, saw the reported loss of over 88 million shillings (800,000 U.S. dollars) belonging to Team Kenya for the Brazil Summer Games.

The court further acquitted four individuals who had been jointly charged alongside Wario and Soi for lack of evidence.

The prosecution alleged that the Ministry and NOCK officials engaged in planning and management of funds meant for the country’s team without following due procedure that led to the loss of public funds.
