Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) Professor Lilian Salami yesterday commended the institution’s researchers over the development of an automated three-in-one hand washing machine.

Presenting the device, leader of the team, Professor Kessington Obahiagbon, who demonstrated the process of hand washing with the machine, explained that the equipment is activated automatically, dispensing soap and water, when someone steps on the platform.

He added that the process ends with the drying of hands, all in one minute.

While thanking the Vice-Chancellor for challenging and encouraging researchers to come up with such trailblazing initiatives, Obahiagbon said the innovation was one among many others on the way.

Salami expressed appreciation to the team for the innovation and their commitment in promoting the institution as a research and technology hub, adding that the university would establish a Department of Innovation and Development that would undertake first-class technological projects even beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Edo Indigenous Movement Worldwide (EIMW) yesterday distributed food items to communities in Edo Central Senatorial District as part of efforts to cushion effects of the lockdown occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic in the area.

Addressing the Enogie of Ewohimin, HRH Peter Ogiefa in Ewohimi, Esan South Council Area, President of the Edo Progressive Indigenes Association (EPIA), Bishop Omogiade Edokpolo said the group comprised Edo indigenes at home and in the Diaspora, who were committed to assisting the less privileged members of the communities.

He added that the Diaspora members have contributed immensely to ensure that the food bank programme was successful to assist in the provision of palliatives to over 1, 000 indigent community members.

Edokpolo expressed gratitude to members of the group, which had made major donations to make the food bank project a reality.

He said, “All these palliatives would not have been possible without the contributions of our General Coordinator for North American, Brown Ehigie Osemwegie and several others too numerous to mention.

“We also commend all members of the Edo Indigenous Movement Worldwide who worked tirelessly to make this a success.”

Speaking on the donation of the relief items, Ogiefa, thanked the Edo Indigenous Movement and prayed that other well-meaning and good-spirited individuals would offer such gesture to his subjects and other Edo people generally.

He also prayed for the leadership of the group and the success of its philanthropy and human developmental projects.
