Mixer boasted the likes of big streamers such as Ninja and Shroud.

When Microsoft announced the streaming platform Mixer, there were high hopes that it could rival Twitch. Of course, Twitch is watched by millions of people and is known for having some of the most entertaining creators in the world. As a way to keep up with Twitch, Mixer paid streaming megastar Ninja to a deal and even gave Shroud a large chunk of change.

Well, it seems as though the Mixer experiment is over as today it was announced that Microsoft would be closing the platform and transitioning all of its creators to Facebook Gaming. As for Ninja and Shroud, they will be able to do as they please. Simply put, they can choose to move to Facebook gaming or go back to Twitch where they made a name for themselves.

“We started pretty far behind, in terms of where Mixer’s monthly active viewers were compared to some of the big players out there,” Microsoft head of gaming Phil Spencer told The Verge. “I think the Mixer community is really going to benefit from the broad audience that Facebook has through their properties, and the abilities to reach gamers in a very seamless way through the social platform Facebook has.”

This is a huge development for the world of streaming, especially since Mixer certainly had potential. In the end, though, not enough people wanted to make that jump from Twitch as it continues to be the industry standard.
