At least two churches in Jos, Plateau State capital, held services on Sunday in clear defiance of government order prohibiting religious and social gatherings of more than 50 persons.

Our correspondent, who visited Church of Christ in Nations located at Diye Tohort, Jos South, said the church service witnessed a massive attendance by members.

A Living Faith Church in Jos metropolis was also holding service with more than 50 members in attendance before a team of the Nigerian police visited.

Although the service was temporarily disrupted, it was allowed to continue after some members were sent home by their church leaders.

While reacting to this, some members who were not pleased, said they would prefer to die attending church services than be infected with the virus and die at home.

The secretary to the state government Danladi Abok Atu said on Saturday that the government has banned festivals and has shut down markets as preventive measures against the spread of coronavirus in the state.

No case of the virus has been recorded in the state.

“In order to ensure that we prevent any case from coming into the state, Government has rolled out measures, including shutting down market; ban on festivals; restriction of gatherings to not more than 50 people; ban on weekly Sunday markets at Ahmadu Bello way, Bukuru and environs; closure of night clubs and drinking joints,” Atu said.
