Chamomile tea is a homegrown tea that has long been used as a traditional folk remedy for a wide range of health issues.

Nowadays, researchers are increasingly exploring its effectiveness in managing illnesses, including cancer and diabetes.

Chamomile contains chemicals called flavonoids, a type of nutrient present in many plants which play a significant role in chamomile’s medicinal effects.

Menstrual Pain Reduction

In a medical study, cited in Medical News Today, it has been discovered that consuming chamomile tea for a month could reduce the pain of menstrual cramps. Women in the study also reported less anxiety and distress associated with period pain.

Cancer Prevention

Chamomile tea may target cancer cells, or even prevent those cells from developing in the first place.

However, research so far is inconclusive, and scientists say more work is needed to prove chamomile’s anti-cancer claims. Also, most researches have looked at clinical models in animals, not humans.

Matić Zorica Juranić Katarina Šavikin Gordana Zdunić Neva Nađvinski Dejan Gođevac, published in 2012, they compared the cancer-fighting powers of marigold and chamomile teas, Medical News Today reports. Both were able to target cancer tumors selectively, but the effects of marigold tea were more potent.

Better Sleep Quality

Chamomile tea is widely thought to help people relax and fall asleep. In a research work by Janmejai K Srivastava, Eswar Shankar, and Sanjay Gupta, titled Chamomile: A herbal medicine of the past with bright future, 10 of 12 cardiovascular patients are said to fall asleep shortly after consuming chamomile tea.

Many researchers such as Charlotte Gyllenhaal, Sharon L.Merritt, Sara Davia Peterson, Keith I.Block, Tom Gochenour in Efficacy and safety of herbal stimulants and sedatives in sleep disorders believe that chamomile tea may function like benzodiazepine which research suggests that chamomile binds to its receptors.

Benzodiazepines are prescription drugs that can reduce anxiety and induce sleep.

Treating Cold

Inhaling steam with chamomile extract can relieve some of the symptoms of the common cold, however, this benefit is not proven yet.

It is, however, important to know that it is also not safe to use chamomile as a substitute for proven medical treatments.
