Panic gripped residents of Ado Ekiti, the state capital yesterday, as material suspected to be bomb exploded about 7.00 am in the Explosives Ordinance Disposal Office (EOD) located within old government secretariat.

The explosion destroyed several offices housing the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs at Oke Ori Omi area of Ado Ekiti. It also destroyed vehicles and reduced EOD office of the Ekiti Police Command to rubbles.

Several buildings located within two kilometres from the scene vibrated, which terrified many people.

Parts of the buildings destroyed included the office of the Nigerian Union of journalists, Correspondents’ chapel, Ekiti chapter.

The Ekiti Police Commissioner, Mr. Asuquo Amba, and officers of the anti-bomb squad were still removing some explosive materials at about 10.00 am.

Governor Kayode Fayemi and his Deputy, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, also visited the scene.

Fayemi queried the rationale for situating such office within government premises and urged the Police boss to relocate the office to where it would not pose a threat to anyone.

The Commissioner said he suspected the explosion was caused by counter-terrorism accessories kept in the office.

He said: “ Let my men from anti-bomb department check around. Officers of the anti-bomb are combing the place. This is the office where they keep detonation accessories. The explosion must have been caused by equipment kept in their store.

“The area has been cordoned off. We are going to devise means of ensuring improvement in stocking this equipment next time.

“We are happy that there is no loss of life. Some of these devices are used to detect bombs and to detonate it. Some detonate on their own and that must have caused the explosion.”
