At 80, Anthony Obi Umeh attributes success to God

Chief Anthony Obi Umeh, one the five sons and five daughters of Pa. Ichie Jonathan Umenwosu Ekwebene of Onyia Oha, Enugu State, has attributed his successes in career and businesses to God.

He is a renowned banker whose career started at Barclays Bank DCO (now Union Bank of Nigeria PLC), Garden Avenue Branch, Enugu on 18 April,1961 and was transferred to Makurdi barely two weeks after resuming at Enugu.

At Makurdi, the octogenarian completed the entire London Institute of Bankers Examination. By 1966, he was a qualified banker (ACIB) and in 1967, he was promoted and designated as Head Office staff but still based in Makurdi.

In July 1967, Chief Umeh left for the United Kingdom (UK) for training/attachment with Barclays Bank Ltd and had an opportunity of working in at least four branches during his attachment in the UK.

At the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970, even till he retired in 1995 from the Banking Industry, Chief Umeh held several managerial positions and had the opportunity of further attachment and training in the UK.

Chief Umeh retired from the banking industry at 55 in 1995 after a send-forth. He got his friends to establish the Igbo-Ukwu Micro Finance Ltd, and was the board chairman for years. He is currently chairman, Board of Directors of Apex Hospital Group.

Chief Anthony Obi Umeh is a member of several social and religious groups, including Ikoyi Club 38 and Peoples Club of Nigeria International. He is involved in community projects and other philanthropic activities.

He is happily married to Nono Ngozi Umeh (Oyibekwesili), a retired senior management staff of Union Bank Plc and they are blessed with children and grandchildren.
