2020 has been a great year for Natural Hairstyles for Black Women. With more women embracing their kinks and coils, and less access to the stylist, there are plenty of hot looks to try.
If you’ve been wondering which style is right for your natural hair, here’s some inspiration to get you started.
The Tapered Look
The tapered look is big right now. It’s a style that showcases natural hair without the maintenance of a full fro. While it’s by no means a low-maintenance hairstyle, the style is worth the time trade-off. Styling this look is easy, but it does require regular trims to keep the shape over time.
Tapered hair is versatile and can be customized in many ways. Pin it up into a frohawk or pompadour. Add a pop of color on the top for some chic contrast. You can even replicate the 90s flat-top for a vintage look that stuns.
Kinky Bangs
Straight bangs are out, and natural bangs are in. Let your curls and coils shine in a whimsical fringe that’s all style and no fuss. Women with high foreheads are all about this look in 2020, and it plays well into the Parisian-inspired French girl cuts that are becoming more mainstream.
The best part of this look is that you can test it before you commit. Pull your hair into a top bun with the ends facing forward for an edgy faux-fringe.
Beads and Embellishments
The cultural hair movement doesn’t stop at going natural— beads and embellishments are coming back in a big way. Wooden beads, gold and silver hoops, and even shells are the perfect finishing touch on a protective style. You can even add them wigs for a lengthy look while your hair is in a protective state (go to EvaWigs for inspiration).
Strings and ribbons are another trending embellishment that looks striking when woven into twists and box braids. This style is a fantastic way to add color without using damaging dyes or chemicals.
Asymmetric Geometric Cuts
More trendsetters are embracing their natural volume and body by opting for asymmetric and geometric cuts. Think bold triangles, sharp shapes, and structure.
Danai Gurira perfected the geometric look in her photoshoot with Porter Magazine, with a look (and narrative) that was pure power. Work with a skilled stylist who can take your natural shape and elevate it to a red-carpet-ready look.
Half-Up, Half-Down
The half-up, half-down look is making a strong comeback this year, both with loose hair and protective styles. Fulani braids, in particular, are expected to be a hot trend this summer. This look goes hand-in-hand with the beads and embellishments that pay homage to the Fula people.
The half-up, half-down look is extremely versatile. You can let your fro fly with a half-up top knot or small space buns. Pull goddess braids into a half-up pony or bun with the remaining braids left to flow for a beautiful protective style that amazes. The benefit of this look is that it works with many other hot styles and can be adapted as needed.
Loose Ends
While ends tend to be tucked and kept safe, more women are letting them loose and embracing a transition to fully Natural Hairstyles for Black Women.
While tree braids with extensions have long been the quintessential loose-end look, more women are trying it out with box braids and Havana twists. The Havana twists, in particular, look amazing in a high pony with loose ends.
Fortunately, with extensions in, the natural ends are still kept in a protective state while the added hair gives the illusion of unbraided ends.
Any of these styles will have you looking fabulous all year long. Experiment with something new and work with a stylist who shares your vision.
