Kenya’s half-year tea exports rose 19 percent compared to a similar period in 2020, the Tea Board of Kenya (TBK) said on Tuesday.

The exports stood at 296.7 million kilograms in the first six months of 2021, up from 250.6 million kilos in a similar period in 2020, TBK said in a report released in Nairobi.

However, despite the rise in exports, general production declined significantly to stand at 274.1 million kilos in the half-year, down from 300.7 million kilos in a similar period in 2020, said TBK.

“Due to unfavorable weather experienced year-to-date coupled with cold temperatures and dry periods, the lower production trend would last until the end of the year,” said the agency.

For month-to-month performance, exports similarly shrank in June to 45.2 million kilos, down from 50.8 million in May.

During the month, Kenya sold the produce to 43 destinations, with Pakistan remaining the top tea purchaser, said the board.
