• 244 Die Of Cholera, COVID-19 In Borno
No fewer than 29 persons were killed by flood while 14,244 houses were destroyed across the 44 local councils of Kano State this year.
The Executive Secretary of Kano State Emergency Management Agency, Sale Jilli, told journalists in Kano, that 14,244 houses were destroyed across the state this year, noting that the state recorded a drop in the level of destruction when compared to last year when 57,362 houses were washed away by flood.
Jili explained that Doguwa local council had the highest number of deaths with 19 victims.
He said: “In an attempt to conform to international best practice, the Federal Government developed a National Disaster Management Framework (NDMF) in 2005, which requires the establishment of emergency management structures in all the three tiers of government.
“KASEMA has been working assiduously in collaboration with National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the state disaster management committee as well as the recently established local emergency management committees across the 44 local council areas of the state.”
The Executive Secretary pointed out that the United Nations General Assembly had set aside October 13 every year for people and communities across the world to celebrate the reduction of their exposure to disasters and raise awareness on the risks they are confronted with.
He charged members of the public to maintain safety at all times and desist from any act capable of exposing them to disasters as the situation could lead to economic recession, loss of lives and properties.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic, cholera and measles have killed 244 people in the last 18 months in Borno State.
The deaths were recorded from 14,227 cases of the diseases in 20 local councils of the state.
This was made known, yesterday, during WHO’s weekly snapshots at the orientation workshop for journalists in Maiduguri titled, ‘Overview of COVID-19, Cholera, CVDPV2 in Borno.”
“Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in April 2020 at Pulka, the epidemiological updates showed that it has killed 38 people in the state,” said Dr. Danladi Ndahi.
He explained that out of the 22,065 cases, there were 1,363 confirmed cases with 6.2 per cent case positivity rate. The case fatality rate (CFR) also stood at 2.8 per cent,” he added.
