The World Health Organization’s Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Monday said he looks forward to working with the projected next president of the United States, Joe Biden.

“We congratulate President Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris and we look forward to working with their administration very closely,” said Ghebreyesus.

President Donald Trump in April announced that he was halting funding to the WHO over its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump said the WHO had “failed in its basic duty and it must be held accountable.”

Biden pledged to revert the decision by Trump should he be elected.

“On my first day as President, I will rejoin the WHO and restore our leadership on the world stage,” said Biden.

The U.S. is the global health agency’s largest single contributor. In 2019, it provided more than $400m (£324m; €360m), accounting for around 15% of its total budget.
