Nigerian afrobeat singer, Tiwa Savage has shared a rarely told story of how she almost attempted suicide due to depression.
While sharing her experience as a black young girl in the United Kingdom, Tiwa recounted how she arrived in the United States at the age of 10 and said she was bullied by her classmates.
“When I got to school, my first day was horrible, I had my hair shaved,” she said she arrived at the class late and the teacher who could not pronounce her name sought reasons for her absence, to which she responded, saying “there was go slow” and then she was mocked by her classmates.
The “Koroba” singer, during her Black Box interview with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu on Bounce Live Radio, described the experience as terrible and said and it got to a point she had police escorts after school, to avoid been bullied.
“I was teased so bad. They used to call me ‘African girl’, ‘Foo foo’, ‘Your food smells’ and so on. It was terrible. It was so bad that I literally tried to kill myself two times. I was really depressed.”
