Barcelona should consider selling Messi this winter transfer market

Manchester City’s chief operating officer, Omar Berrada, has officially confirmed that the Premier League club has kept the financial resources set aside to sign Lionel Messi of Barcelona in the summer transfer window, according to GOAL.

The Sky Blues are confident that they will sign their wanted man after failing to acquire his services this summer after several attempts. Lionel Messi himself is eager and motivated to join forces with Pep Guardiola once again in his career.

Messi’s contract is set to run out in the summer of 2021 and Barcelona must make a decision on whether they should sell the 33-year-old in January or lose their greatest ever player on a free transfer next season.

The 33-year-old captain is currently valued at 100 million euros, according to Transfermarkt. Barca could possibly sell Messi for a figure way higher than his market value and could use the transfer fee to improve a few positions that are lacking in the squad.

THE LAST SHOT TO CASH IN ON MESSI

If Barcelona does not negotiate a deal with Manchester City in the winter transfer market, then the Sky Blues will sign Messi on a free transfer. Messi and his agent are legally permitted to agree to personal terms once there are just six months left on his contract which technically means once the winter transfer market closes.

At the age of 33, Messi probably has two years left in his boots to perform at the highest level. It would be a wiser option to let the Argentinian player leave this January for over 100 million euros and in return, the transfer fee could be used to sign players to bolster the squad. It is high-time that Barca starts planning for a future without Messi.

TIME FOR A DRASTIC CHANGE AT BARCA? YOUTH TAKEOVER?

Barcelona has been ridiculed by the media for having a seriously aging squad. Lionel Messi himself stated that he had considered leaving the club as he believed that the side needed a fresh change with more younger players and that his tenure at the club had come to an end.

Lionel Messi has been part of the first team of Barca since 2004, maybe it is time for the king of Camp Nou to step down from the throne and pass on his legacy to the younger ones?. Messi’s possible departure could provide the limelight and attention towards Ansu Fati and several other players that could prove to be either positive or negative. Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann, Francisco Trincao, and so on could also be given more importance and a bigger role at the club that could drastically improve their performance.

THE CLUB ALWAYS COMES FIRST

An institution is always more important than the people who work in it and the same must follow in Barcelona. The Catalan club has more or less made Lionel Messi status larger and more important than the club. This is something that has not been seen at any other top European club and it must come to an immediate end.

If Lionel Messi wants to leave Barca, then the club must let him go irrespective of how pivotal his role is in the squad. Messi’s sacrifice towards the club and his glorious achievements will always be part of the club’s history and pride, however, the club always comes first.
