Four students, teacher freed in Kaduna after ransom

Two medical doctors abducted by gunmen in the eastern part of Kogi State last week have regained their freedom. They are Dr. Ebiloma Aduku of Zonal Hospital, Ankpa, and Dr. Ejike Mgbeahurike of Christ the King Hospital, Anyigba.

While the former was reportedly whisked away at Ankpa on October 6, 2020, the other was abducted from his hospital in Anyigba on October 7.

Confirming their release to The Guardian yesterday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Kogi, DSP William Aya, said the abductors released Aduku on Friday about 11 p.m., while Mgbeahurike was released the following day by the Nigerian Police Safer Highway Patrol team of Ankpa Division.

He said: “On October 7, 2020, one Dr. Ejike Mgbeahurike of Chris the King Hospital, Anyigba, was reportedly kidnapped and whisked away by unknown gunmen at Anyigba. So, the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, Ede, Ayuba Ekpeji, ordered an intensive manhunt to ensure the victim was rescued unhurt.

“Acting on the order, the Safer Highway Patrol team of Ankpa Division, while on routine patrol duty along Ojogobi/Ogodo axis, rescued a man in a bush along Ankpa/Anyigba road who turned out to be Dr. Ejike Mgbeahurike.”

The PPRO added that efforts were being made to recover Mgbeahurike’s vehicle.

Similarly, bandits have freed four students and their teacher kidnapped in Chikun Council of Kaduna State after payment of an undisclosed amount of money.

The gunmen had invaded Damba Kasaya last month where they killed 29-year-old Benjamin Auta, torched a church, and kidnapped four students and a teacher, Christiana Madugu, of Prince Academy, who were preparing for the Junior Secondary School (JSS) examination.
The students are Miracle Danjuma, Favour Danjuma, Happy Odoji, and Ezra Bako.

They were reportedly released on Saturday night.

A source told The Guardian yesterday: “They released all of them last night. When the first ransom was paid about two weeks ago, they refused to release them. Another ransom was paid before they returned to the village yesterday.”
