The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has said that the police will be professional and neutral during the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states.

The IGP, who disclosed this at a one-day interactive session with conveners/representatives of the various Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), yesterday, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, also assured that the police would provide a level playing ground for all during the elections.

He called for improved collaboration and support from civil society groups in the country towards the successful conduct of the September 19 and October 10, 2020 Edo and Ondo gubernatorial elections respectively.

Adamu noted that the meeting became necessary as part of ongoing efforts by the Force leadership to galvanise critical stakeholders to share knowledge, compare notes and experience on the conduct of elections in the country.

He further assured the CSOs of adequate security and enjoined them to assist the police in identifying impostors who may want to hide under the umbrella of accredited CSOs to foment trouble during the elections.

The CSOs, on their part, pledged support for the police and other agencies involved in election security management in the country.

They commended the IGP for the existing cordial relationship between the police and the CSOs and also for his quick responses to issues bordering on human rights abuses, sexual and gender based violence and so on.

IN another development, a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ifedayo Abegunde, who resigned from Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu administration, has returned to the governor few weeks to governorship election in Ondo State.

Abegunde resigned his appointment in June and declared his support for one of the governorship aspirants, Segun Abraham who participated in the July 20, 2020 All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election and lost to Akeredolu.

The former SSG later switched his support for another governorship aspirant, Olayide Adelami, after Abraham withdrew from the primary election race and backed Akeredolu.

Abegunde, at the weekend, met with Akeredolu at the Government House, Alagbaka, Akure and took photographs with the four plus four fingers after the meeting.

A source said: “Yes, Abena (Abegunde) was with the governor this evening.

“They have settled their differences.”
