A native doctor and 67 members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra have been arrested by police for unlawful assembly in Imo State.

In a statement yesterday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed that the IPOB members were intercepted by troops at a checkpoint in Mmahu Egbema on August 9.

According to him, they were on their way to Abashieke Egbema in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of the state to meet the native doctor, Mr Cyprian Amadi, “to fortify themselves against bullet penetration”.

Ikeokwu said the military then alerted the police who arrested the separatists, and later Amadi.

The police believed that the IPOB members were planning to attack security officers with the aim of snatching weapons from them before they were nabbed.

Ikeokwu claimed that the native doctor had removed bullets from one of the separatists who had sustained gunshot wounds in the past.

“It is also noteworthy that the group attacked and snatched two rifles from police during a violent protest in 2018 and the rifles were later recovered from a kidnap gang during a robbery,” he said.
