Talk Africa: China’s scholarships to Africa
China scholarships to Africa.

Ties between Africa and China have gone beyond just trade and investment. The Chinese government has undertaken tremendous efforts to help Africa’s youth through education.

A UNESCO report highlighted China is set to offer 12,000 scholarships to African students in the coming academic year. This is more than the leading western governments combined.

During the 2018 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), China made a bold pledge to offer 50,000 scholarships to African students from 2018 to 2021.

Even outside of scholarships, many African students have shown interest to study in China in recent years.

In 2018, the number of African students in China reached an all-time high with 16% percent of all international students in the country being from the continent.

The year saw a huge jump in African students from having less than 2000 students in 2003 to over 81,000 in 2018 and became the most popular destination for African students after France.

This week on Talk Africa we will explore how China’s scholarship program for African students has helped it forge a deeper and more meaningful bond with Africa.
