Barack Obama Issues Statement On Killing Of George Floyd

Barack Obama is opening up about the tragic police killing of George Floyd.

George Floyd’s murder at the hands of Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin has been all over the news as of late and it has sparked widespread protests all throughout the nation. Floyd’s murder was caught on camera and immediately went viral on social media. As a result, many became outraged and justifiably so. Now, Chauvin has been arrested and protests continue to manifest. Even President Donald Trump has weighed in on it all, noting that he will call in the military to stop looters, if necessary.

Now, former President Barack Obama is issuing a statement on it all and as you can imagine, he has some very poignant words that will ring true to many. Obama is deeply saddened by what is happening and urges that this must all come to an end. Too many people of color in this country feel scared to leave their homes and it’s a fear that is rooted in hundreds of years of trauma.

“This shouldn’t be ‘normal’ in 2020 America,” Obama wrote. “It can’t be ‘normal.’ If we want our children to grow up in a nation that lives up to its highest ideals, we can and must be better. […] “Being treated differently on account of race is tragically, painfully, maddeningly ‘normal’ – whether it’s while dealing with the health care system, or interacting with the criminal justice system, or jogging down the street, or just watching birds in the park.”

It remains to be seen how this story will progress although as millions of Americans can attest, we hope to see progress sooner rather than later.
